The brand, which is known for changing its face every few years, is hoping to appeal to the more sensual and sultry notes of the fragrance and they are betting on Mendes to bring out the darker, sexy side of Angel.

A statement read: “While Naomi Watts’ ethereal beauty embodied the angelic aspect of the fragrance, Thierry Mugler chose to reignite the enticing and explosive dimensions of the fragrance with the sultry Mendes. Although her obviously flawless physical beauty is in perfect harmony with the artist’s aesthetic canon, Miss Mendes mesmerised Mugler with her independence, determination and humour.” She will begin appearing in campaigns from September and we’re pretty excited to see how she influences the Angel brands art direction.

Cheryl Cole 'battled back tears' in the midst of X Factor US tryout: Cheryl Cole reportedly "fought back tears" during her X Factor audition for US TV executives. Sources told a gossip magazine that the Girls Aloud star has made to film a screen test for bosses at the Fox network. Cole is said to be in the running to land a place on the panel of the US franchise of Simon Cowell's X Factor.

An insider told Star magazine that Cole's "nerves got the better of her" during filming of the two-hour test episode. A source told the magazine: "At one point she looked like she was going to cry when a make-up artist reapplied her make-up. "She sat with three producers from the show, who she had to banter with like they were judges."

The insider continued: "I understood her accent most of the time, but many of the others asked her to repeat a lot of what she said. That must have got to her.""I liked her – she was really cute and smiled a lot. She didn't have much authority, but that takes time. Maybe she could fit in as the `nice one' of the judges."

Now Cheryl has been told her 20-a-day habit is stopping her voice from responding to the elocution techniques in Los Angeles.

But the GIRLS ALOUD star, 27, refuses to give up. A source said: "Cheryl's teacher has advised her to stop smoking.  "But she says the move to LA and X Factor job is stressful enough without having to try and quit the cigs on top. Voice coaches are determined to make her sound more American but in a natural way. Basically just so she can be understood."Cheryl has also been warned against using any Geordie phrases.
